F--- the FCC

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” These are the words of the First Amendment. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an “independent United States government agency, directly responsible to Congress. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia , and U.S. possessions.” Unless the communications are in regard to national security, according to the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America , the FCC has committed heinous crimes against its people by censoring what is broadcasted on Television, Radio and soon the internet. This makes the idea of the FCC and the Communications Act of 1934 unconstitutional for abusing their powers and restricting the right to the freedom of speech.

Perhaps one of the best examples of just this is the Episode of Family Guy entitled: “PTV.” In this episode, as a credit to another of my examples, The Super Bowl halftime show involving Janet Jackson, David Hyde Pierce has a “trouser malfunction” and shows off his crotch to the world during the Emmy's. The FCC then gets involved due to an inflow of complaints (20 people) and begins to censor everything that could be taken as sexual, i.e. “The Dick van Dyke Show” became the “-Bleep- Van –Bleep- Show.” Peter then goes on to create his own television station ”PTV” and is eventually shut down by the FCC. The FCC, as usual, then begins to go overboard and start to censor real life. The episode ends with a big song and dance routine that pretty much says that the FCC has gone beyond its limits. Family Guy was actually cancelled two seasons before that episode aired because FOX thought it was too over the top for TV. After Adult Swim on the cartoon network began playing the episodes, which beat out both Leno and Letterman in ratings for two months straight, FOX, for the first time in their history, picked the show back up and began creating new episodes.

Now to the Super Bowl. During the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVIII, Janet Jackson's nipple was exposed, whether accidentally or purposely many have their reservations, and caused an uproar amongst the FCC and mostly the religious communities. The FCC then set a decree that all “Live Events” such as the Super Bowl and the Oscars, would be transmitted with a 5-10 second delay so that they may edit the content presented to international viewers. What makes this extremely interesting, and the example Larry Flint used while fighting for his first amendment rights, is that the FCC would rather show mutilated bodies, war, destruction, etc. than a natural part of the human body, which if you blinked you would miss. Everyone has nipples, and we usually see them every day when we bath, are we offended by that? Show we censor our own showers? In the 1950's the Ed Sullivan show censored Elvis Presley's hips for the fear that they were too erotic for people to see. Is this not just a progression into the future of what is to come?

Howard Stern, the FCC's number one most wanted, has been fined repeatedly, without explanation, and was forced to move to Satellite Radio because free radio is not free. The reason Howard Stern became so famous was because of his ability to speak his mind and not hold back from doing so, regardless of threats from the FCC. Now we are forced to pay to listen to free speech… Hypocrisy does not even begin to cover the meaning of this.

My project is a celebration of my first amendment rights in all its glory. Embracing my freedom of speech, and my right to petition the government for grievances, in my own way, against this atrocity that is the FCC. The FCC's “Seven Dirty Words,” “Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, Tits,” are usually some of the most common words used in the English language and are even being integrated onto television and radio. I use the impression of the term “Fuck You,” portrayed by my shirt and my two middle fingers, as an expression of my free speech and how the FCC should go fuck themselves for being completely unconstitutional.

As stated earlier, the FCC should only exist to regulate communications in the matter of National Security. Now should they claim that this is there charter, then one must ask if the fundamental premise behind the bill of rights, the first amendment, the freedom of speech; is Free Speech a National Security risk? Hypocrisy is a pointless way to describe this, the best is to say “Fuck the FCC!”
